Proof Coins

FOR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS

Each year only a limited number of these coins are struck and issued by the U.S. Mint. Gold most commonly comes in a four coin set that includes a 1 oz., 0.5 oz., 0.25 oz. and 0.1 oz Gold Eagle while silver typically comes as a single 1 oz. Silver Eagle.

A proof coin carries a higher premium than normal bullion coins, offering the investor an opportunity to add investment grade (semi-numismatic) coins with greater long-term potential into their retirement account. While mints around the world offer proof coins, Gold and Silver American Eagle proof coins are currently the only proof coins permitted for Precious Metal IRAs, according to U.S. law.

These beautiful coins are delivered encased for protection and include an official, U.S. Mint issued, Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing the weight and purity of the coin.

The First Coin Ever Minted

The Lydian stater, or trite, is believed to be the first coin man ever minted, depicting a lion’s head on the obverse with punch strikes on the reverse. The metal, an alloy of gold, silver, copper and other trace elements, was weighed and placed on a die, then struck with the punch, pressing the die’s design into the coin. Interestingly, many of these coins are available for collectors today.

GROWING PRECISION IN MINT TECHNIQUES

As technology progressed with the centuries, more precise methods developed as well. The hammer and die eventually gave way to machines that were able to strike the coins with great precision and detail.

As the dies became more detailed, preliminary test strikes were minted in order to examine the results and check for possible flaws. Most of these coins, called proofs, were archived. Today, however, special runs of coins are minted for the express purpose of offering proof state coins to investors.

Such coins are characterized by sharper rims, great detail and a more polished, mirror-like, field. More recently, some have also been specifically designed to give a frosted appearance to certain parts of the design.
