Silver Walking Liberty Half - MS-62

Silver Walking Liberty Half - MS-62

The United States Walking Liberty Half Dollar is another large precious metal coin that, given its purchase power, circulated regularly during its existence.  Its 90 percent silver, 30 millimeters in diameter and weighs 12.5 grams with a reeded edge.

The half dollar is a perfect size to work with in terms of design composition and when it was decided in 1916 that the nation needed new coin designs, three New York based sculptures were enlisted to compete for the jobs.  German born Adolph Alexander Weinman, who trained under Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was awarded the commission for both the dime and the half dollar.

His design features a full-length walking Liberty on the obverse, complete with a glorious rising sun as her destination, the Stars and Stripes around her, and an armful of laurel and oak branches.  Her name graces the top, the date is at the bottom and the motto In God We Trust is behind her.

A powerfully bold eagle perched atop a mountain crag graces the reverse, with United States of America at the top, the half dollar denomination at the bottom and E Pluribus Unum to the left.  Critics, press and public received the spectacular design positively, as the symbols of strength, patriotism, and confidence managed to hit just the right note.

Weinman’s design was further honored by having it chosen for the US Mint’s one-ounce American Eagle Silver bullion coin, which began issue in 1986.

This coin, has been certified by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) as a nearly choice brilliant uncirculated MS-62.  With the weak strikes this type is known for, a coin of this pedigree is anything but common and having one in a collection or portfolio with the certification adds both value and peace of mind.

This particular Walker has nice luster, clean fields and a pleasant toning.  It is a wonderful example of a beautiful coin in a scarce grade that collectors and investors treasure for their popularity, thanks to Weinman’s exemplary design.
