Silver Peace Dollar - MS-64

Silver Peace Dollar - MS-64

This United States Peace Dollar has been graded an impressive MS-64 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).

The end of the Great War marked a relief for America that ushered in the jazz age, flappers, art deco design and the roaring twenties of Gatsby fame.  Stirred by lobbying from numismatists, the public felt that this peace deserved a symbolic new coin.  This, combined with the need to produce large quantities of silver dollars to satisfy the Pittman Act of 1918, led to a competition among nine notable medallists to design a silver dollar to replace the famed Morgan Dollars that had been circulating from 1878 to 1904, with another issue in 1921.

The youngest of these participants was Anthony de Francisci and his submission was selected for production.  This Italian born sculpture immigrated to the United States as a teenager and is also responsible for the design of the 1920 Maine Centennial commemorative half dollar.  De Francisci’s wife, Mary Teresa, served as model for Liberty and the crown is reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, an icon dear to the designer and his family.

The diameter of the coin is 38.5 millimeters with a weight of 26.7 grams and a reeded edge.  All coins from this year were minted in Philadelphia.  This first year featured a high relief design that aids in visual appeal, but lends itself to premature die deterioration, which the mint corrected by striking subsequent years with a lower relief.

This particular coin has been certified as mint state 64 by NGC.  Having certified coins from a major third party grading company in a numismatic portfolio is important for value and peace of mind.  The pleasant, even toning and the original luster combined with the sharp strike coins of this grade possess ensure greatest value and ease of resale.  Peace Dollars are difficult to find in high grade because of the large, open fields and the propensity for weak strikes, making a coin in this grade highly sought after.
